研究全世界5个长寿地区，写作多本关于「蓝色区域」(Blue Zones)的作家布特尼(Dan Buettner) ，对于长寿区的居民之所以长寿，他归纳了许多共同的生活环境和习惯，包括都有很好的社会支持系统、每天运动以及以植物为主的饮食方式。

这五个长寿区分别是日本的冲绳、哥斯达黎加的尼科雅(Nicoya)、希腊的伊卡里亚(Icaria)、加州的洛马林达(Loma Linda)，以及意大利的萨丁尼亚(Sardinia) 。
布特尼还发现，这5个地区的人，还有一项意想不到的共同嗜好：园艺。这5个地区的每一个住宅区，居民都喜欢一辈子养花莳草，一直到80、90岁甚至更老，都还一直在拈花惹草。

户外体力活和长寿的相关性大家都知道，而园艺又比一般纯体力活更能达到长寿的目的。
「园艺不那么粗重，是比较可以让人常常做、长久做的体力活，」布特尼指出，喜欢从事园艺的人活得比较久、压力比较小，是有证据的，已经有很多研究证明，园艺对身心健康都有好处。

最新来自荷兰的一份研究是这样的：研究人员要求参加研究的人做压力测试，然后将他们分为两组，一组在室内读书，一组在户外做园艺，时间都是30分钟 。读书的那一组，读后再做压力测试，结果都说自己的心情变坏了，而做园艺的那一组，不但压力荷尔蒙氢化皮质酮降低了，而且都说他们感觉情绪都变好了。

澳洲研究人员则是研究60岁的男人和女人，发现长期从事园艺活动的人，老后罹患认知症的比率，比不做园艺的人低36%。
